Frequently Asked Questions

Everything parents and wrestlers need to know about Trojan Heart and Pride Wrestling

Have a question about our program? We've answered some of the questions we hear most often below. If you don't find the answer you're looking for, please feel free to contact us.

Who can join Trojan Heart and Pride Youth Wrestling?

Our wrestling club is open to boys and girls in 2nd through 8th grade.

We are the closest USA Wrestling club for families in North Austin.

Does my child need wrestling experience?

No! Beginners are welcome.

Our coaches teach the fundamentals step by step, including stance, movement, takedowns, defense, and wrestling technique.

Many Texas wrestlers don't begin wrestling until high school. Participating in youth wrestling gives students an opportunity to develop wrestling skills, athleticism, and confidence before they enter high school.

What should my child wear to practice?

Athletes should wear comfortable athletic clothing such as a T-shirt, shorts, compression gear, or sweatpants.

We strongly recommend wearing sweatpants or kneepads to help prevent mat burns.

Wrestling shoes are recommended. However, if your child does not have wrestling shoes yet, bring a pair of clean tennis shoes to practice and change into them after arriving.

Is wrestling a safe sport for kids?

Wrestling is a physically demanding sport, and athletes will occasionally experience bumps, bruises, and other minor injuries.

Like all youth sports, there are risks associated with participation. Wrestling's injury rate is comparable to other popular sports such as soccer and basketball.

What happens at a typical practice?

Practices generally include:

  • Warm-up and movement
  • Wrestling technique instruction
  • Drilling and repetition
  • Live wrestling
  • Conditioning
  • Strength and athletic development

Our goal is to make practices challenging, productive, and fun while helping wrestlers steadily develop their skills.

Will my child have to compete?

No. Competition is encouraged, but it is not required.

Wrestlers can participate simply to learn the sport, build confidence, improve fitness, and develop their wrestling skills.

For athletes who want to compete, we will help them prepare for tournaments and find appropriate opportunities to compete.

How often should my child attend practice?

Consistency is the key to improvement.

We recommend attending practice regularly whenever possible. The more consistently a wrestler practices, the more opportunities they have to develop their technique, fitness, and confidence.

Can beginners participate in tournaments?

Yes! Beginners can compete in tournaments.

Many tournaments offer a rookie division specifically for first-year wrestlers, giving new competitors an opportunity to gain tournament experience against other beginning wrestlers.

What does my wrestler need to bring to practice?

Wrestlers should bring:

  • A water bottle
  • Wrestling shoes, if they have them
  • Comfortable athletic clothing
  • A positive attitude!

Most importantly, wrestlers should arrive ready to listen, learn, and work hard.

  • Middle School (6th–8th grade): $110 + USA wresting card
All wrestlers must also purchase a USA Wrestling membership for $55. The USA Wrestling membership is purchased separately.
Can parents watch practice?

Yes! Parents are welcome to watch practice.

We do have limited space and seating, so we ask parents to be mindful of the space available.

We also welcome parents who are interested in becoming volunteer coaches. Wrestling experience is helpful, but it is not required.

If you're interested in becoming a volunteer coach, send us an email .

What are the goals of your club?

Our goal is to help young athletes develop strong wrestling fundamentals along with confidence and discipline.

Most importantly, we want our wrestlers to enjoy wrestling and have a positive experience as part of our team. We hope many of our athletes will continue wrestling in high school and enter their freshman season with the skills, confidence, and experience to compete successfully right away.

Pat Moore

After walking on at Auburn University, Pat earned a full scholarship and became a three-year letterman and SEC champion while earning a degree in electrical engineering. At Auburn, he wrestled under National Wrestling Hall of Fame coach Swede Umbach.

After retiring from a career in the semiconductor industry, Pat wanted to give something back to the sport that had meant so much to him growing up. He became the head wrestling coach at Anderson High School, where he also taught mathematics. During his five seasons as head coach, he qualified at least one wrestler for the state tournament every year, including a state runner-up in his final season.

Pat is married and has two sons, both of whom wrestled for Anderson High School. In addition to coaching youth wrestling, Pat enjoys playing pickleball and golf in his spare time.

Kyle Schumacher

An accomplished Florida high school wrestler, Kyle credits wrestling with far more than athletic achievement. The sport helped him build character and forge lasting friendships.

He is excited to help the next generation of young wrestlers experience those same benefits.

Following his MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, Kyle built his career in technology startups.

Kyle and his wife have two young sons. In his limited free time, Kyle enjoys fly fishing.

Danny Lenz

Coach Danny Lenz brings a high level of competitive athletic experience and a deep passion for youth sports to the Anderson Youth Wrestling program. He's been coaching youth sports for over a decade now.

Originally from Florida, Coach Danny grew up competing in the 6A high school classification. As a team captain for East Lake High School, ultimately earning All-Pinellas County honors he won the regional tournament to qualify for the State Championships. His formative years spent in Florida's intense wrestling scene taught him firsthand the profound value of technical precision, mental toughness, and an unrelenting work ethic.

Now a Sr. Director at Dell, a dedicated parent of 3, and an active community volunteer in Austin, Coach Danny is committed to helping young athletes build self-confidence, master the fundamentals of the sport, and discover the rewards of hard work.

Carson is an Austin native and wrestled for Anderson High School. He was a four-time district champion, three-time state qualifier, and a state runner-up in freestyle as a junior.

Carson was also a drummer in the Anderson marching band.

While attending the University of Texas and studying computer science, Carson was a member of the UT wrestling club. He was a two-time Southwest Conference runner-up and qualified for the NCWA National Championship Tournament in Orlando.

USA Wrestling Coach: Copper Certified

Patrick Timmons

Patrick was born in Norman, Oklahoma, but moved to Austin when he was two years old. He attended Austin ISD schools throughout his childhood and participated in the LASA program at LBJ High School.

Patrick started wrestling at LASA after getting cut from the basketball team as a freshman. After a slow start, he found success during his sophomore season, winning the Capital Classic Tournament and beginning the season undefeated.

During the summer following his sophomore season, Patrick competed in the Freestyle Wrestling State Championships and became a Cadet Freestyle State Champion. This earned him a place on the Texas National Team, where he competed at the National Duals in Freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling as a member of the Texas All-American Team.

His high school accomplishments include being a four-time district finalist, three-time district champion, regional champion, and three-time Texas State Wrestling Tournament qualifier, in addition to his Cadet Freestyle State Championship.

Following high school, Patrick officiated wrestling for more than a decade in the Austin and San Antonio areas. He served as an assistant wrestling coach at LBJ High School from 2015–2017 and is currently in his fourth year as the head wrestling coach at Anderson High School.

Practices are held every Tuesday and Thursday evening in the Dance/Wrestling Gym at Anderson High School, with the first practice scheduled for Tuesday, November 3rd. However, due to the construction, we will not be able to enter from the entrance by the tennis courts. The map below shows the entrance that we need to use now. It is basically the same drop off that people use for the lacrosse/football field. Enter the road to the field from Cima Serena Drive where the arrow is. You will follow the road all the way down almost until it dead ends. You will see monkey bars on the right by the entrance doors
